Scotty’s little Soldiers

£1,240 Raised for Scotty’s little Soldiers

On Saturday 17 June.

A record twelve teams entered this year’s Charity Bowls Challenge and helped raise a record £1,240. Organised by Holsworthy’s Mens Captain Dave Webb for a charity that is very dear to his heart. The day was sponsored by Mike Down Electrical Services with generous support from local businesses. These include the Market Cafe and Cousins Cafe, Woolacotts and Coodes Solicitors.

Scotty’s little Soldiers is a Charity that supports bereaved children who have lost a parent who served in the military.

The twelve Teams came from a variety of organisations, companies and friends. These included; last year’s winners Holsworthy Town Council (3 teams),Market Cafe, Rotary, Walk and Talk, Alf Blackman Builders and groups of friends.

Each team played three 6 end matches of triples supported by mentors from Holsworthy Bowling Club. After the second round of matches The Foxes {Lee Thomas, George Wilcox and Paul Blackman) were in the lead with 34 shots (21 of which were from their first match)  with The Three Lions (Stuart Greening, Sam Curtis, and Harry Watts) in second place with 25 shots. At this stage a fine buffet lunch was served in the clubhouse.

The last round of six ends saw the Foxes gain 7 shots giving them a total of 41. The Three Lions were hot on their heels and scored 14 giving them a total of 39, they did however drop a potenial 5 shots on one end that would have made them the winners. The Foxes were presented with their winning trophies and £90. The Three Lions as runners up also received Trophies and £60.

Dave Webb said ‘ Scotty’s Little Soldiers is a charity very close to my heart. When we started planning this I set a target of £500 or so. A very big thank you to all who played and helped. The support I have received from the town, bowling club, friends, organisations and companies has been incredible. I am still receiving pledges from other organisations and clubs in the town wishing to make donations and hope by the end of the year that the total raised will move towards £2,000. Today really does prove what we know that Holsworthy is a small town with a big heart.’

JULIE BOWLS MIKE OVER

Holsworthy Bowling Club was delighted to help celebrate the wedding of two of our members recently. The weather was superb and the Bride (Julie Brown) and the Groom (Mike Prosser) were joined by Julie’s daughters and their husbands; Claire Foster-Bull and Matt, Jodi Foster-Lake and Ken plus two friends Jenny and Rob Healey. The wedding group joined club members in an hour of bowls before the wedding tea held in the clubhouse where members toasted the newlywed couple and gave them best wishes for the future.

Julie and Mike met five years ago in Lymington, Hampshire and after a walk amongst the New Forest ponies realised that the chemistry was definitely there. A little while later they decided to make their permanent home in North Devon.

After two years in Fremington they moved to Holsworthy and their bowling journey began. They played a short time in the outdoor season last year and progressed to Short Mat bowls through the winter.

After Mike’s proposal to Julie whilst holidaying in the Canary Islands the Wedding Day was set for 27 May.

Because of such a warm welcome received from the club members in the early days they wanted to involve them in their wedding festivities. They decided to have a wedding reception in the Clubhouse so their family, friends and club members could enjoy an afternoon of bowling fun and share and enjoy their Special Day.
